Fairfood has launched the Fair Supermarkets campaign in collaboration with the Dutch political party ChristianUnion (ChristenUnie) and Stop the Traffik. The website is intended to motivate the cabinet to start talks with Dutch supermarket chains. The aim of the campaign is that all Dutch supermarkets will only carry sustainable products under their home brand labels by 2015.
On Monday 6 December, ChristianUnion Member of Parliament Joël Voordewind presented Parliamentary State Secretary of Development Aid Ben Knapen with a shopping trolley full of sustainable products from supermarkets, in order to emphasize the lack of sustainable home brand products among these. Following up on this, Knapen committed himself to collaborate with the supermarkets to make a full range of sustainable home brand products available by 2015. Now that politicians have embraced this proposal, it is up to the supermarkets to take further action. Fairfood will stay involved to make sure that the stated goal is indeed reached.
The Dutch Organisation for Agriculture and Horticulture (LTO) will also support the Fair Supermarkets initiative, if this will lead to an improvement of farmers’ incomes. Click here for the LTO Netherlands’ reaction in full.
